The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval to lapatinib in combination with capecitabine for the treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer whose tumors overexpress human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) and who have received prior therapy, including an anthracycline, a taxane, a trastuzumab.

Health Canada approved lapatinib in combination with capecitabine, for the treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer whose tumours overexpress ErbB2 (HER2). Patients should have progressed on taxanes and anthracycline before starting this therapy. In addition, patients should have progressed on prior trastuzumab therapy in the metastatic setting.
